BA-SID Professional Person Spotlight – Ozan Cakmakci
Ozan Cakmakci leads the optical design and architecture group focusing on eyewear displays at Google. He previously led the development of next-generation optics for Google Glass and has contributed to technical due diligence of augmented reality investments totaling several hundred million dollars.
Ozan earned his Ph.D. in Optics from the College of Optics and Photonics, CREOL, at the University of Central Florida in 2008. He has published extensively in augmented- and virtual-reality optics, with more than 3,800 citations, and holds over 100 issued patents. He is particularly known for his work on curved lightguide technology.
He is the author of Optical Design of Eyewear Displays, a comprehensive reference on the optical engineering of modern XR eyewear. Tracing the journey from optical principles to product implementation, this book covers the human visual system, display metrics, microdisplays, optical components, and architectures ranging from freespace systems to waveguides. It is intended for optical engineers, researchers, students, and others working at the intersection of optics, electronics, and AI-enabled eyewear displays.
