Dr. Robert Sprague

Dr. Sprague has been actively engaged in the display industry in silicon valley since the early 80’s when he was Associate Manager of the Electronics and Imaging Lab at Xerox PARC, including one of the first active matrix transistor facilities in the world and only one of a few in the US. He later moved on to a role as Associate Research Center Manager of PARC, where he played a broad role in management of PARC, and was pivotal in bringing programs in electronic paper displays, ink jet printing, active matrix displays, and optical disk to product readiness. He was also Manager of the Document Hardware Lab which developed Gyricon, one of the first epaper display technologies. He left PARC to form and lead the Gyricon Corporation in 2000, which developed and sold a system of wireless epaper signs for use in retail and business campus applications. In 2006 he moved to SiPix Corporation with the role of Sr. VP of R&D and Engineering, which developed microcup electrophoretic technology for a range of applications including initiating of some of the first color electrophoretic activities. In 2012 he moved to Amazon Lab 126 to run the tablet display group, overseeing several series of product tablet displays including the first LTPS mid-size tablet and the first 7 inch tablet with quantum dots. Today Dr. Sprague is a Principal Hardware display engineer at Lab 126, working on a range of new display technologies for ereaders, tablets, and echo devices.

Dr. Sprague has over 300+ (144 US) patents and applications, two dozen publications, and has given numerous invited talks at SID in the field of paper-like displays. He is the recipient of “President’s” awards from Xerox and SPIE and the Kingslake medal of SPIE, a Fellow of OSA and SPIE, and a past President of SPIE. Dr. Sprague has a Ph.D. and B.S. in optics from the Institute of Optics, University of Rochester.
